Match Reports 2011
2 May 2011 v Hamworthy / Corfe
The saying that you should 'never give up' holds true! Solid batting display to start the season with Connor and Henry both retiring on 35 and Gasper and Charlie both knocking a few quick runs at the end seeing us to 110-2 off 18 overs of steady bowling. Hamworthy started comfortably always up with the run rate and faced with some inconsistent bowling and our old Achilles heel of too many wides (20!). Tom looked good behind the stumps, with plenty to do! Rob McClashie took his first wicket for Broadstone, with good support from Charlie bowling straight as ever. However, needing only 11 with 5 wickets left and our heads down in the field, Gasper turned to Connor and Jaydn who turned the match on its head taking the last 5 wickets inside 3 overs to leave the match tied and Hamworthy all out. Several good catches by Will, Ben and Rob backed up the bowling. Jaydn finished with 4-11.
9 May 2011 v Bransgore
A bit of a hangover from last week's match saw Bransgore opening batsmen starting off comfortably at around 4 an over. Whilst we improved on the number of extras compared to the previous week, bowling short and wide didn't really help us and with a fast outfield the ball was frequently despatched to the boundary. Both their opening batsmen retired, paving the way for subsequent batsmen to continue to accelerate the score, reaching 157-5. Our ground fielding was positive however, keeping the score lower than may otherwise have been the case. Our innings got off to a bad start losing our two openers in the first over, as Bransgore showed the benefit of bowling straight! We never really recovered from that and in the face of steady bowling it was all about an opportunity for some of the less experienced players to have a bat. Joe played a few nice shots towards the end, as we finished all out on 85.
10 May 2011 v Poole (Nat West U15 Cup)
A really positive performance and a resounding 10 wicket victory. Putting Poole into bat, Ben and Will opened with 5 really steady overs, and the subsequent first change bowlers, Dom and Joe, then tightened the screw with wickets falling regularly, despite a few lusty blows. Further bowling changes saw Josh, Rob and Charlie continue to keep the presure up and supported by athletic fielding we bowled Poole out for 77. Dan started off our reply with to two cracking fours which set the tone for he and Dom to canter to victory inside 14 overs, with Dom finishing it off with a six. Couldn't have asked for more!
16 May 2011 v Christchurch (League Cup)
After winning the toss Ben decided to bat for a change. However the early loss of both openers to loose shots looked like it could have been the wrong decision. Josh and Connor batted positively getting the rate up to 6 an over. Unfortunately Connor tried taking on the spinner once too often and got stumped well out of his ground. Rob then continued to keep the run rate up and we looked well set for a score of 120+. Unfortunately Rob also got stumped, even further out of his ground than Connor, and our innings then collapsed leaving us 93 all out. Our batsmen struggled against their spinner who bagged a 'five-fer'. Didn't know if it would be a big enough total but Rob proved me wrong by destroying their top order in taking 5-11 and proving the benefit of bowling straight and full. They never really recovered from their poor start and with good support from Josh, Charlie and Connor and keen fielding, ended up 68-7. Our fielding has continued to improve with plenty of positive encouragement to the bowlers and a bit more thinking about positioning has also helped. Still bowled too many wides (20!) but you can't have it all.
17 May 2011 v Swanage (NatWest U15 Cup)
Swanage won the toss and decided to bat. A couple of early wickets from Rob and Ben pinned the scoring rate back to around 4 an over. Again good support from the spinners (Dom and Josh) and keen fielding kept the batsmen struggling for runs with another couple of wickets falling. The fifth wicket pair however batted confortably and in the last few overs managed to accelerate the scoring, allowing Swanage to reach 119-4. This looked a reasonable score until Matt and Dan set about the opening bowlers, rattling along to 45 after 3 overs. Scoring settled down a little after that but the loss of Dan made no difference as Dom maintained the strike rate and after Matt retired on 51, Josh came in and with Dom finished it off inside 12 overs at 122-1. Another good performance, with one more prelim game to go.
23 May 2011 v Wimborne
Broadstone won the toss and on a cloudy evening, decided to bat. Steady batting throughout (for once listening to the manager) sawe us reach a good total of 128-4 with Josh, Will and Connor all reaching their 30s. Wimborne in reply struggled for runs early on, reaching 36-1 after 10 overs, with tight bowling from Will, Harry and Josh. Forced to push on, a regular clatter of wickets then fell, with Josh bagging 4-11, Harry 3-15 and Brett chipping with the last 2, bowling Wimborne out for 82. Good support from the fielding again helped. Wides still a bit of a problem with a further 20!
26 May 2011 v Wimborne (NatWest U15 Cup)
3 days later we returned to the Leaze to play Wimborne again, this time in the NatWest Cup. What a funny old game cricket is though, as arguably with a stronger team, Broadstone submitted meekly this time against the same Wimborne team! Again Wimborne struggled for runs early on, reaching 37-1 after 10 overs. However, this time their batsmen were able to pick up the pace, reaching 103-8. Rob and Ben bowled tightly early on, with Christian later taking 4 wickets and Matt S chipping in with 2. In reply, Matt and Dan set off confidently, reaching 24 off 3 overs and seemingly cruising to victory. After a rash shot from Matt however, the rot set in with Wimborne's opening bowler delivering an inspired third over to get a hat-trick and reduce us to 32-3. The next few batsmen refused to get their heads down and perished rapidly. From that point we never looked like we were in the game and steady bowling from Wimborne closed out the game as we were all out for 62. Disappointing result for the lads but they really must learn when they need to 'batten down the hatches' for a few overs.
6 June 2011 v Wayfarers Warriors
Weakened team tonight with exam season upon us but a chance for a few others to have a bat or bowl. Nearly an even weaker team with Richard sending 9 of the team to the Delph to play instead of Charborough Road! Batting first, unfortunately more often than not our batsmen 'got in' and then 'got out' again (perhaps they would have been better to stay at the Delph after all!). The exception was Ryan who batted really calmly to 32 not out with good late support from Harry. Total of 107 all out, but probably worst of all not using all of our overs. Also, a distinct lack of communication between the batsmen when running, leading to one run-out and a few other close-calls. In reply Wayfarers lost an early wicket but the next two batsmen then dominated our attack and despite numerous bowling changes never really looked in any danger, both retiring. Rob McC had a late cameo and bowled a beautie to take only the second wicket of the innings, with Wayfarers reaching their target after 15 overs.
7 June 2011 v Dorchester (NatWest Cup Quarter Final)
Lovely sunny evening again (defying the forecast) and arrived in confident mood. Dorchester chose to bat and started really well at 6 an over; despite an accurate spell from Ben they seemed able to find the gaps in the massive out-field. Our fielding was great throughout though and despite the pressure we chased down everything to the boundaries, saving quite a few runs in the process, which turned out to be crucial (keep reading!). After an opening partnership of 51, Dom and Will tightened the screws and with further support from Matt S and Josh, the scoring rate slowed down to around 4 an over. With wickets in hand however the last 5 overs yielded 46 runs, leaving a challenging score of 113-2. We needed a good start and got the opposite, losing our openers at 13-2. Dom and Josh then battened down the hatches and crucially eliminated any risks. The down-side was that the scoring rate suffered and we reached 28 off 8 overs. The scoring rate then picked up but accurate bowling from Dorchester mean't we really had to fight for the runs and we continued to fall behind the run rate, needing 7 an over after 10 overs. Dom and Josh pushed on, eventually departing for well-played 33 and 38. This left Will and Connor needing 26 off the last 3 overs and with aggressive running between the wickets, ultimately 11 off the last over. An overthrow off the first ball left Will on strike and with everyone's hearts in their mouths he cooly picked off four consecutive 2s with the pressure telling on the home fielding Needing two off the last ball, a fumble by the keeper meant that Will scrambled home to much celebration from our lads. A great team performance and really deserved win, although the result could have easily gone the other way.
24 June 2011 v Ferndown Wayfarers (NatWest Cup Semi-Final)
In complete contrast to the Quarter-Final, this match was played on a damp, cold evening at Claysmore School. Will lost the toss and as expected we were put-in to bat, not the best start given the weather forecast (rain later). However, against these odds, we started positively with Matt unusually playing himself in (not seen so many forward defences before!) and Dan starting off like a train! These two quickly put on 28 off the first 5 overs, before Matt was caught. Dom then provided a useful foil for Dan to continue to accumulate runs on what was proving to be a difficult wicket to bat on. Dom got a little bogged down and perished with the score on 64 off 13 overs, having contribute a valuable 13. From this sound base, we then needed to try and pick up the scoring rate, which thanks to Dan (retiring on a great 50 not out off 35 balls), Joe (14 not out) and Ben (12 not out) we managed, reaching 118-5 off our 20 overs, with 30 coming off the last 4 overs, mainly through well placed shots and aggressive running between the wickets.
It looked a pretty useful score and so it proved, with Ben taking a wicket with the first ball of the innings, albeit bowling their opener with a delivery which didn't bounce much! A close run-out in the second over and another clean-bowled in the third over reduced Wayfarers to 3-3, a position from which they never recovered. Really tight bowling and fielding strangled their innings to 16-3 after 8 overs. The biggest threat at this point seemed the weather as a few spots of rain threatened more to come. However, some rapid overs by the spinners saw us though to the minimum 10 overs bowled and continued tight bowling by Joe and Dom, backed up by sharp fielding, reduced them to 18-5 and then 26-8 after 16 overs. Their ninth wicket pair batted solidly bringing the final score up to 50-9. Great figures for Ben (2-5) and Joe (3-2). Overall a really good team performance seeing Broadstone through to the final to meet Wimborne (again!).
6 July 2011 v Wimborne / Colehill (NatWest Cup Dorset Final)
With both teams clearly really excited about the chance to win some silverware and represent Dorset in the next stage of the cup, such a shame that the weather was a damp squib - overcast, blustery wind, damp and intermittent rain. Third match of the season between these two teams and plenty of banter with both teams knowing each other well.
Will won the toss and given the weather and the chance of a reduced target if batting second decided to put Wimborne into bat. Ben and Rob bowled really consistently, giving Wimborne very few bad balls and restricting them to 25-1 off the first 8 overs with only two fours (Ben 1-11 and Rob 0-14). The spin duo of Dom and Joe continued the strangehold up to 12 overs with the score 32-2. At this point the Wimborne batsmen started to take a few chances (as they needed to) and accelerated the scoring rate over the last 8 overs to seven and a half an over, reaching 92-5. Josh and Charlie bowled well under pressure at the end, with the fielders providing good support despite the cold hands! Joe finished with 2-17, and Josh and Charlie chipped in with a wicket each.
Scoring runs hadn't looked that easy but Matt and Dan started well and with the minimum of fuss scoring 26 off the first 3 overs. The weather then turned, becoming pretty gloomy and pouring with rain, leaving the umpires no choice but to come off. This left everyone unsure as to whether we would manage to finish the match. However, prompt replacement of the covers on the square and a strong wind meant that the weather cleared fairly quickly, and with a reasonably dry wicket left a revised target of 75 off 16 overs. Matt and Dan continued as they had left-off before the rain break, looking fairly untroubled, before Matt departed for 15 at 37-1 off 6 overs. With Dom's arrival at the wicket, the run rate remained high at 6 an over, predominantly with well-placed shots providing easy singles. Despite several bowling changes, Wimborne struggled to contain Dan and Dom with Broadstone reaching the target off only 12.2 overs for the loss of only one wicket. Dan finished on a rapid 30 of 26 balls, well supported by Dom on 19.
Thanks to the Wimborne club for hosting the match and despite their obvious disappointment, great sportsmanship from the Wimborne players who made sure that we were able to finish the match despite the weather.
17 July 2011 v Northwood, Isle of Wight (NatWest Cup Regional Qualifier)
Waking up to the weather more like a March morning than the middle of July was not a good start. Fortunately, with the support of the umpires, both teams were keen to play a full match, particularly with our visitors having left early in the morning to catch the ferry. A good crowd had gathered to watch (both home and away supporters) presumably drawn by the chance of some food and drinks to warm up!
Will won the toss again and put Northwood in to bat. With the wicket starting off dry but having been under the covers since Friday and with the weather forecast so variable, this looked like the right decision.
Within the first 3 overs, Ben had reduced them to 17-2, finding a little extra bounce for two sharp catches 'behind' by Matt. Rob for once struggled with his line and an early change to Charlie worked dividends with a further wicket falling in the fouth over to a catch by Will - 18-3. Ben was hit for two fours off his last over but finished with a well bowled 2-19 well supported by Charlie with 1-7 off 3 overs. A switch to spin and medium pace (Joe and Will) allowed Northwood initially to accelerate the scoring to 5 an over (51-3 off 10). However, Joe then bowled the Northwood no. 5 (Collier) at a really cricual stage. Joe, Dom and Josh then really tightened the screws, in particular starving the Northwood opener (Duggan) of opportunities. Duggan had batted really comfortably up to 35 off around 10 overs but was then unable to keep it going, eventually falling seventh out for a well played 45. The lower order batsmen struggled to pierce the infield but with a few late blows reached 81-9 off their 20 overs. Joe and Dom finished with 1-20 and 2-13 off their 4 overs. Josh spoiled his figures at the end having taking 3 - 0 off his first 7 balls - in his desperation to get 'an average' he allowed the no. 10 to spoon the ball up into the air between 2 fielders for a 2, and eventually finished with 3-3! Matt also finished with 4 dismissals - two caught and two stumped.
Matt and Dan were given license to open the batting in the way only they know, both hitting the ball sweetly to reach 37 off the first 5 overs. By this stage, the weather had improved with Broadstone definitely getting the better of it for batting. Matt then perished bowled having started the innings in the way we needed. Dom batted solidly at no.3, steadily accumulating 19 and despite the loss of both Dan (for a well played 24) and Josh for a duck at 48 in the 9th over, with Joe's help (15 not out) Broadstone reached the target in a relatively untroubled manner off 15 overs.
A really good team performance again with everyone contributing in some way, be it batting, bowling or fielding. Hopefully this will stand us in good stead as we go on to the next match against the Hampshire champions.
Finally thanks to all the parents for the great spread of food - hopefully the Northwood team were able to return home full, if understandably somewhat disappointed.
Next match away v Yateley, Hampshire on Sunday 24 July at the Delph, start 12.30 pm
